Villarreal have been given a €4,000 (£3,300) fine after a tear gas canister was thrown onto the pitch at El Madrigal during Saturday’s game against Celta Vigo.
The game had to be stopped and the stadium evacuated as a result, although the outstanding portion of the fixture was played after the smoke had cleared.
Celta were 1-0 up at the time and went on to win the game 2-0.
Spain’s Anti-Violence Commission praised the work of the Villarreal staff and emergency services in getting fans out of the ground in a timely and orderly fashion.
Villarreal were praised as their “collaboration, from the start of the incident, was impeccable, following the orders of the head of security of the police force in order to evacuate the stadium.
“[The Commission] reminds football clubs they should make use of all measures to control the access of spectators into their stadiums to avoid events like those witnessed at Villarreal happening again at a sporting spectacle.”
A fan was fined €6,000 (£4,900) and banned from entering any sports stadium for two years for ripping a seat out of the stand at Vicente Calderon during the Atletico Madrid-Real Madrid Copa del Rey game and throwing it, striking another fan and a police officer.
