Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update resumes, after glitches stopped play

Samsung has begun rolling out Android 4.3, aka Jelly Bean, to the Galaxy S3 for a second time, after the initial upgrade was stymied by a range of issues and, in the worst cases, bricked handsets.
The first attempt at the update tipped up on Samsung’s former flagship phone back in early November and brought with it support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, a new proprietary browser and a natty revamped keyboard. In theory, at least.
However, within a matter of hours users were reporting everything from severe battery drain problems to untimely crashes and frozen screens. Some even testified that their Galaxy S3 phones were rendered completely inoperable.
Today Samsung has pushed out a new update, available for free and over-the-air via the phone-maker’s Kies download solution, that purportedly addresses the issues.
Apologising for inconvenience caused by the borked OS bump, Samsung stated: "The fix for the issues with Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean 4.3 upgrade has begun rolling out to selected users in the UK, and will continue to do so.
"Specific upgrade schedules will vary by mobile operators. Please check your phone for the upgrade."
It’s worth noting, before you all get too excited, people, that the freshly baked software is initially only available for unlocked smartphones. That is, those bought off-contract and SIM-free.
If you picked up your Galaxy S3 on a monthly contract (and we’re guessing that’s, ooh, about 99% of you), you’ll likely face a longer wait while your carrier ensures Android 4.3 works with its proprietary services and any other bloatware it has dumped on your smartie.
